Sometimes, pathways must pass close to existing trees, and construction in these sensitive areas can put significant stress on their root systems. Excavating with heavy equipment can tear or wound roots, potentially leading to long-team decline. Luckily, Alex and Mark are here to help the trees weather the shock.
As a part of our restoration of Lowell Swamp Locks Park with Haven Contracting and Copley Wolff, our team used their agricultural expertise and an air spade to carefully excavate around the existing tree roots. Unlike an excavator, an air spade uses compressed air to remove soil without tearing through tree roots, allowing the existing root system to be exposed and worked around with greater care.
Once the tree roots were exposed, our team was able to properly prune damaged or poorly position roots, making clean cuts and reducing the potential for further injury. The team also applied a root treatment to help the trees withstand the stress of construction and support their recovery.
